Meta unveils Aria Gen 2, its research-focused headset combining AI and AR

Aria Gen 2 improves on its predecessors and features advanced sensors, enhanced processing, and better usability.

Meta, on Friday, introduced its next-generation glasses. With the latest Aria Gen 2, the social media giant hopes to enable researchers from industry and academia to unlock new work in machine perception, contextual AI, robotics, and more.

“Today, we’re excited to announce the next step in this journey: the introduction of Aria Gen 2 glasses. This next generation of hardware will unlock new possibilities across a wide range of research areas, including machine perception, egocentric and contextual AI, and robotics.” Meta said in its blog post.

The Aria Gen 2 is a research-focused headset that has been designed to help in the advancement of AI, machine perception, and robotics. The device does not have a display, and reportedly it works on sensor-driven spatial intelligence and also comes with upgraded RGB and eye-tracking cameras, spatial microphones, etc. It is equipped with Meta’s custom silicon for real-time AI processing.

The latest upgrades also include a photoplethysmogram (PPG) sensor that is used for heart rate monitoring and a contact microphone for accurate voice isolation.

The smart glasses are built on the foundations laid by Project Aria, which began in 2020. When it comes to Aria Gen 2, the device improves on its predecessors and features advanced sensors, enhanced processing, and better usability.

The device is also power-efficient. Since it is built on Meta’s custom silicon, it is ultra-low-power and supports on-device processing for SLAM, eye tracking, hand tracking, and speech recognition. The device has been designed for all-day use as it offers six to eight hours of battery life. It weighs 75 grams and has foldable arms for convenience. Moreover, the open-ear force-cancelling speakers offer high-quality audio feedback, enhancing interactive experiences.
